Health Career Education for High School Students

Through their high schools Health Academy Programs, many high school students have received an in-depth, organized introduction to careers in health care. The Academy is a two-semester curriculum, developed by SECAHEC in cooperation with the schools as well as local health care professionals and facilities.

High School Health Academy During the first semester, students learn and practice job related skills that apply to virtually any career such as interpersonal communications and conflict resolution. They also start to study medical and health care terminology, learn CPR and first aid, review basic health care laws such as the Health

Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)  and began conducting research on more specific health care careers.

At the beginning of the second semester, these students select two out of three more in-depth career education programs. The three options include nurse aid, first responder or community health worker training. These programs provide opportunities to learn more about professions such as nursing, hospital care, nursing home care, community health public health and emergency room services. After completing their two chosen areas of study, students are encouraged to take the state exams required to become certified nurses aids or first responders.

Upon successfully completing the two semesters, students are eligible for six to eight-week paid internships with hospitals, nursing homes and other facilities that participate in the program.
