The 25th Annual Celebration of Nightingale Nursing Awards for Excellence in Human Caring  Saturday, May 1, 2010

In accordance with National Nurses Week, SECAHEC sponsored a Nurses Tea on May 12th to celebrate the nursing profession. The tea was coordinated by Eve Muniz Valdez RN, SECAHEC nurse/staffer. The function was held at Pueblo Community College and the featured speaker was "Florence Nightingale" (Debra Ball, SECAHEC Office Mgr). She was accompanied by her nursing assistant, Mary McDonnell (Suzette Bartch, SECAHEC Admin. Asst.). She addressed a diverse nurse's group thanking them for their dedication to the profession and encouraged them to forge forward in the face of the challenges that nurse's face today with the global nursing shortage. She gave examples of the challenges she faced in the early days of nursing and verbally handed the symbolic nurses lamp over to the group with the

faith that they would go forward in a collective fashion to promote the noble and progressive profession.

Eva Tapia RN, NP, PCC Nursing Dept was recognized for being selected as the Nightingale of our region for 2010. Ms Tapia went on to the state level to be recognized with other regional finalists. Pueblo County Commissioner, Anthony Nunez, read a proclamation in honor of Ms Tapia and proclaimed May 12th, 2010 as "Eva Tapia Day" which is also the birth date of Florence Nightingale.

The nurses group was able to receive information about the health focused programming that is offered by the SECAHEC staff:

  • Eve Muiz Valdez RN. : Asthma Toolkit nurse educator/trainer

  • Shanae Gutierrez: Asthma Assistant

  • Jo Stinchcomb: Education Outreach coordinator

  • Kristi Harshbarger: Education Outreach coordinator

  • Debra Ball: Business office manager

  • Suzette Bartch:  Administrative Assistant

All of whom are directed by SECAHEC director, Iris Clark, MAOM

It is hoped that this May Nurses Tea will be an annual event and will encourage health care facilities to recognize their nurses by nominating them to the Colorado Nurses Foundation Nightingale awards every September. SECAHEC, a non-profit, facilitates the Nightingale Awards for our area.
